Walking on eggshells…
The Smith* family, consisting of Mom, Dad, and their two children (5 and 12), was struggling with Dad’s anger outbursts.
He often had a couple of drinks to unwind after a long day at work. He would then frequently get into power struggles and yell at his children for not completing their chores. Yelling was common, but one day, a verbal altercation with Mom turned physical when Dad threw a plate against the wall. The children were startled.
Dad apologized and tried to make amends, but the children remained fearful as they never knew when another outburst would occur.
Burned out…
The Carter* family (Mom, Dad, and their three children between 5 and 11) had difficulty maintaining a clean and organized household.
Mom and Dad both worked full-time jobs – at times, with alternating schedules. It reached a point where the house was littered with clutter, the children ignored their parents’ demands for more structure, and they were falling behind on their hygiene.
The cumulative impact of everything left Mom and Dad feeling weighed down and passive.
Here’s what therapy did for them…
The Smiths – Safety compliance and improved connections…
The family learned techniques to assist the children with their sense of safety and control and tools to manage their stress and emotions.
The parents learned and implemented new parenting skills to manage their children’s behavior while promoting a safe, nurturing environment. The children began re-establishing a connection with their father.
Dad reported feeling more positive overall, and Mom expressed improvement in how she and her husband communicated.
The Carters – Organization and renewed energy…
The family learned new parenting and cleaning techniques that created a routine, improved the condition of the home, and met the children’s basic needs.
The family implemented a behavioral modification system with a chore chart and treasure box. The parents reported that the children were doing well with the system and enjoyed showing off how many stars they earned.
You can rebuild your family unit.
In family therapy, we’ll combine evidence-based mental health practices with the Nurturing Parent Program (NPP), with which I have extensive training and experience.
The length of the online therapy program is customized, averaging between 8-12 weeks. Sessions are divided into working with the entire family and then separately with the parents or the children.
We’ll start by identifying your family’s core needs: anger, stress, communication, conflict, safety coping strategies, or parenting skills.
Afterward, we’ll do an in-depth biopsychosocial history of your family, complete baseline assessments to track your progress, and customize weekly goals and interventions.
Oh… and we’ll also have fun!
I’ve helped many families as a therapist, parenting coach, and family preservation counselor, and I would be delighted to help yours, too.
